Spring City Borough Council is expected to discuss potential zoning regulations for data centers during its meeting on Monday, August 3, as the borough joins a growing number of local municipalities taking a proactive approach to the emerging industry.
The agenda includes an item labeled "Data Center Discussion for Potential Zoning Amendment," as borough officials consider zoning regulations that would govern where and how such facilities could be developed.
Although Spring City covers just about one square mile and no data center has been proposed in the borough, officials are looking to get ahead of the issue rather than wait for an application to arrive.
The discussion mirrors efforts underway across the region. East Pikeland Township recently adopted zoning regulations for data centers before any proposal was filed, while Upper Providence Township, Royersford Borough, and other municipalities have also begun drafting or implementing their own regulations.
Meanwhile, Limerick Township is in the midst of a conditional use hearing for a proposed large-scale data center near the Limerick Generating Station, and East Vincent Township is defending its denial of a proposed data center at the Pennhurst property following the developer's appeal.
Monday's meeting will also mark the first borough council meeting held at the Liberty Fire Company, 20 S. Main Street, while Spring City Borough Hall undergoes a complete reconstruction.
Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
