Spring City Borough Council members will discuss two environmental initiatives at their Monday meeting, including a potential single-use plastic bag ban and the formation of an environmental advisory council (EAC).
The ideas were brought forward by two of the borough's newest council members. Councilor Sara Woll suggested exploring a ban on single-use plastic bags, while Councilor Dylan Hutchinson proposed creating an EAC.
Plastic bag restrictions have been adopted by many municipalities in an effort to reduce litter, limit environmental impacts, and encourage the use of reusable alternatives. For example, nearby Phoenixville began implementing restrictions on single-use plastic bags in 2025.
Woll, who began her term in January after winning election last November, is expected to outline the concept for council's consideration and discuss how the policy could work in Spring City.
Hutchinson, who was appointed to his position in March, will share details about his vision for a Spring City EAC. He previously indicated that environmental initiatives were among the projects he hoped to pursue during his time on borough council.
EACs are municipal advisory bodies that typically focus on environmental education, conservation, sustainability, and natural resource protection. These groups often provide recommendations to local elected officials on issues involving open space preservation, environmental stewardship, and community beautification.
Several neighboring municipalities maintain active EACs, including Upper Providence Township, East Vincent Township, East Pikeland Township, and Schuylkill Township. Phoenixville Borough operates a tree advisory commission that promotes street tree and public tree programs.
The meeting will be held Monday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Spring City Borough Hall, located at 6 S. Church Street.
