Limerick Township is recruiting residents to serve on a volunteer steering committee that will help shape a 10-year comprehensive plan, with applications open through Friday, September 18.
Greta Martin Washington, the township's director of community planning and zoning officer, told the board of supervisors on Tuesday that the application period could remain open beyond Friday if certain key positions are not filled.
The planning team from engineering consulting firm Remington & Vernick has identified four areas of expertise the township wants represented on the committee: environment, housing, transportation, and land use.
Martin Washington said those members should preferably be Limerick residents or business owners. While the township could look outside its borders if necessary, she said she expects a community of roughly 21,000 residents should have qualified candidates.
A comprehensive plan sets a municipality's long-term vision for issues such as land use, development, transportation, and infrastructure, helping guide future zoning and policy decisions without itself determining what uses are permitted.
Martin Washington said the local experts would help turn ideas from the public into workable recommendations for the plan.
The steering committee is expected to meet five times between November 2026 and November 2027, with the first meeting tentatively set for November 4.
The process also calls for three public meetings between committee sessions. Martin Washington said the first would gather residents' ideas, the second would organize and confirm those ideas, and the third would collect feedback on a draft report.
The draft would then go to the planning commission and board of supervisors for review, with those discussions expected in fall 2027.
The township has reserved the first Wednesday of each month as a potential date for either a steering committee or public meeting, but Martin Washington emphasized that the committee will not meet every month. The remaining steering committee dates will be set as the planning process progresses. Materials will be distributed in advance so members can prepare.
Martin Washington said the township has also begun scheduling interviews with department heads and other selected community members, with those conversations expected to take place in the coming weeks.

Neighboring Royersford Borough and nearby Spring City Borough are also in the process of updating their comprehensive plans.
