Spring City Mayor Adam Alberico is inviting residents to lace up their running shoes — or simply line the route — when a 9/11 remembrance run passes through the borough next week.
The Race for Remembrance 9/11 Tribute Run is expected to make its way through Spring City around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9. Alberico is asking residents who want to participate to meet him at Turkey Hill, located at 2 E. Bridge Street in Spring City, no later than 4:45 p.m. and join the runners as they continue toward Royersford.
There is no cost or registration required to participate locally, and residents of all ages are welcome.
“Whether you run a foot, a half mile, or keep going for as long as you can, it doesn't really matter,” Alberico said in a video posted to social media on Tuesday announcing the event. “What matters is that we come together to honor those we lost and to show that we will never forget.”
Residents who do not want to run are encouraged to gather along the route with signs and cheer on the runners as they pass through the area.
The Spring City stop is part of a two-part, six-day tribute run that will cover more than 485 miles in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The first portion begins Saturday, September 5, at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA, where organizers plan to honor the 40 people who died aboard Flight 93. Runners will then cover about 170 miles over two days, traveling through Pennsylvania and Maryland before reaching the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on September 6.
The second portion begins September 8 following a remembrance of the 184 people who were killed at the Pentagon. A team of runners will then cover more than 270 additional miles through Washington, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey before reaching New York City on the morning of September 11.
That portion of the route is scheduled to pass through Spring City on September 9.
On the final morning, runners and volunteers are scheduled to travel together to the Staten Island Ferry before continuing to Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan. Organizers plan for the runners to arrive before 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center, to pay their respects.
The campaign is also raising awareness and funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
“Let's show them what Spring City is all about,” Alberico wrote on social media. “Come out, stand together, and help us honor those we lost and everyone impacted by September 11th.”
