Spring City's annual Community Day will move from Brown Street Park to Main Street next year following a Borough Council vote Monday, November 2, creating a second annual downtown street festival intended to support local businesses and attract more visitors.

The decision follows the success of the October 3 Music & Market Festival, which prompted the borough's Parks and Recreation Committee to explore additional opportunities to close Main Street for community events.

"We got a lot of really positive feedback that it was very beneficial for all the vendors that attended, but especially the Main Street business community," said Committee Chair and Borough Councilor Matt Handley.

The committee subsequently recommended relocating Community Day, traditionally held at Brown Street Park in late May or early June, to Main Street.

Like the Music & Market Festival, the relocated event would involve temporarily closing a section of Main Street to vehicle traffic. Handley said Community Day typically lasts about four hours, compared with five hours for the fall festival.

The change would increase the number of annual Main Street festivals requiring street closures from one to two.

Traffic and Safety Concerns

Although council members generally recognized the potential benefits for downtown businesses, the proposal prompted questions from officials.

Councilor Rick Pennypacker asked whether Main Street residents had been consulted about the change. He also questioned how another closure would affect traffic.

Councilor Sara Woll acknowledged that another festival would create some inconvenience for Main Street residents but argued that the economic benefits justified a temporary disruption.

She pointed to feedback from business owners who said the October festival had introduced their stores to new customers and increased community awareness of what downtown Spring City has to offer.

Questions About Cost

Councilor Brandon Woll questioned the additional costs of closing Main Street, including police overtime and public works expenses. Borough Manager Kisha Tyler said no estimate had been prepared, while Mayor Adam Alberico confirmed that additional police staffing would be necessary.

Handley noted that Community Day already requires police coverage, and Tyler said she did not anticipate a significant increase in costs.

Pennypacker suggested postponing the vote until cost estimates were available, but Handley argued that an immediate decision would allow the Parks and Recreation Committee to begin planning and coordinating vendors.

Brandon Woll ultimately moved to approve the relocation, with Sara Woll seconding. The motion passed 4-1, with Pennypacker voting against it and reiterating his preference to postpone the decision. Council President Don Shaner and Vice President Chris Yocum were not present at Monday's meeting.

A detailed street closure plan for the 2027 event, which is currently scheduled for May 22, has not yet been announced.

The relocation represents another step in the borough's efforts to bring more activity to its growing downtown business district, where new storefronts, restaurants, and community initiatives have recently generated momentum.
