Ryan Sheehan Sworn In as Upper Providence Township Police Chief

Ryan Sheehan was sworn in Monday evening as the new chief of Upper Providence Township, stepping into the role after 15 years with the police department.

Judge Walt Gadzicki administered the oath at the beginning of the September 21 board of supervisors meeting, where about 100 friends, family members, law enforcement officers, and other supporters gathered for the ceremony.

Sheehan, who has served as a lieutenant for the past five years, will replace Chief Mark Freeman, who is set to take over as Whitpain Township’s police chief in October. Freeman spent 35 years with the Upper Providence Police Department, serving as chief since 2021, according to Around Ambler.

Before administering the oath, Gadzicki described Sheehan as a trusted and steady leader who listens well, leads by example, and understands the importance of both supporting officers and holding them accountable.

“What you're getting here tonight, I think, is just a true leader,” Gadzicki said.

Following the ceremony, Sheehan thanked township officials, his family, fellow law enforcement officers, and members of the Upper Providence Police Department for supporting him throughout his career.

“I’m not just fortunate to be in this position and have this opportunity," Sheehan said. "I’m fortunate to work for this township, for Upper Providence. It has been so good to me for the past 15 years.”

Sheehan also thanked Freeman for his mentorship, guidance, and friendship.

“You've been my leader since day one,” Sheehan told Freeman.

He closed by praising the department’s officers, detectives, support staff, and other employees, saying they embody its values of honor, integrity, and service.

“I can't wait to come in tomorrow and keep moving forward,” Sheehan said.
