The drones are coming.
After months of planning, Royersford has officially announced details for a drone light show that will illuminate the borough's riverfront on Saturday, September 12, as part of its celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
The show will begin shortly after dusk at the Riverfront at Royersford plaza at 147 Main Street, where Shy Guys Coffee-R-Cade is located. Sunset is expected around 7:15 p.m., with spectators encouraged to find a viewing spot before it gets dark.
The approximately 10-minute show will feature 150 drones flying in coordinated formations, using colored lights to create images in the sky synchronized to music.
Mayor Alex Metricarti, who first brought the idea to borough council, announced the finalized details on Friday.
The drones will launch and land from the grassy area between the railroad tracks and the Schuylkill River. That area will need to remain clear during the event.
Spectators can gather along the railroad tracks or bring chairs and blankets to watch from the trail along the river.
Like a fireworks display, the drone show will be relatively brief. Metricarti encouraged attendees to be in place by dusk to avoid missing the performance.
The show will cap a busy Saturday in Royersford. The borough's annual Community Day, as well as the Royersford Farmers Market, will take place earlier in the day, followed by a plein air art exhibition outside Royersford Commons, 624 Main Street, at 3 p.m.
The September 12 event will celebrate the semiquincentennial of the United States, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
