Jim Scanlon Concludes Tenure as Spring-Ford Interim Superintendent

The Spring-Ford Area School District marked the end of an era Monday night as Dr. Jim Scanlon participated in his final school board meeting as interim superintendent, closing out a tenure defined by collaboration, community engagement, and a focus on students.

Scanlon, who began in the role in August, used his final remarks to reflect on his time in the district and the relationships formed along the way. He pointed to the district’s strong sense of community, from engaged parents to a collaborative administrative team.

“It’s been my pleasure to work alongside all of you for these past seven months,” he said. “Healthy discussions will almost always lead to better outcomes.”

Throughout his remarks, Scanlon returned to a consistent theme: decisions grounded in what is best for students. He highlighted the work of district leaders and staff, noting that even complex discussions — such as those surrounding long-term planning — ultimately centered on student needs.

“It’s a team of people that’s not afraid of hard work, and they always bring the discussion back to what is best for students,” he said.

Scanlon also reflected on time spent in the schools.

“Every week I received invitations from teachers about the creative things that were happening in the classrooms,” he said.

He commended the district for its wide range of student opportunities, including more than 100 clubs and activities, as well as recent academic and athletic recognitions. Earlier in the meeting, the board honored 11 National Merit Scholarship finalists as well as the boys’ wrestling team, boys’ swimming and diving team, and boys’ basketball team.

Board members took time during the meeting to recognize Scanlon’s leadership and thank him for his service. Board President Abby Deardorff said his time in the role “never felt interim.”

“You stepped in with purpose and commitment,” Deardorff said. “You led us in a way that allowed others to grow, contribute, and shine — and that kind of leadership leaves a lasting impact.”

Scanlon also acknowledged the board’s role, describing it as a group that worked through differing viewpoints while maintaining a shared focus.

“We didn’t always agree,” he said. “But at the end of those discussions, decisions were always made in the best interest of students.”

As the district prepares for its next chapter, incoming superintendent Dr. Jay Burkhart is set to begin April 1. Scanlon said he looks forward to supporting the transition.

“Spring-Ford is poised to continue its success preparing students for life beyond the school district,” he said.
