Family-Run Brain Tumor Awareness 5K to Return to Royersford

A family-run charity 5K will return to Royersford on May 16 after Royersford Borough Council approved the request to hold the event for a second year during its Feb. 24 meeting.

The family-friendly event, known as Harp’s Joggin’ for Your Noggin, debuted last May as a community 5K fun run and walk. The run is not timed.

The fundraiser began after the Harp family’s 13-year-old son was diagnosed in August 2024 with a brain stem glioma. He underwent surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and continues to be monitored by his care team for a portion of tumor that could not be removed. Tina Harp, one of the event’s organizers, presented the request to council and said her son is doing well. The family hopes to continue raising awareness and funding for brain cancer research through the annual event.

Proceeds from the run benefit the National Brain Tumor Society, a national nonprofit focused on advancing research, improving treatment options, and advocating for patients and caregivers affected by brain tumors. Founded more than 30 years ago, the organization describes itself as the largest patient advocacy group in the United States dedicated to curing brain tumors and improving the lives of patients and families. In addition to funding scientific research, the group works to influence public policy and mobilize patient and caregiver communities.

Last year’s inaugural run raised nearly $13,000 over two months, drawing runners, walkers, and local vendors. Organizers said this year’s vendor list may expand, with plans that could include additional local food and wellness providers.

Participants are expected to gather behind the Royersford Police Department before heading through borough streets toward the farmers market area, continuing onto the Schuylkill River Trail for roughly a mile-plus before turning around and returning along the same path.

During council discussion, a key concern was ensuring participants can safely cross Main Street. Borough officials indicated that assistance will be provided to help runners navigate the crossing.

Council’s authorization is contingent on the organizer providing required event insurance documentation.
