Walking down Main Street in Spring City, signs of revitalization are becoming increasingly visible: breweries, new shops, and property owners investing in their spaces.

But just off the main corridor, Riveredge Square — a shopping center parallel to Main Street, partially hidden from passing traffic — has quietly been building momentum of its own.

Those who frequent the shopping center may have noticed a storefront with the Chaos imprint appear.

Then another.

Then another.

Bridget Gatcha first opened Chaos Piercing in Riveredge Square about three years ago and has since expanded into two additional neighboring businesses: Chaos Tattoo and Chaos Studio, a flexible creative and coworking space designed to give entrepreneurs, artists, nonprofits, and creators affordable access to professional workspace.

What began as a single piercing shop has gradually evolved into a small creative hub.

For Gatcha, a Kimberton resident for more than 25 years, Spring City offered the right combination of accessibility and affordability when she first opened Chaos Piercing.

“I didn't want to set up a big studio somewhere with huge overhead where it was just going to put us at a price point where we weren't accessible to our clients,” she said, noting that prices range from options for those just getting started with piercings to more intricate jewelry selections. “We try to cater all across the board.”

She also cited Riveredge Square’s proximity to the Schuylkill River Trail and major roadways like Route 422, along with what she described as a strong sense of community.

“We have our own little local village,” she said. “And it's just such an opportunity to grow in this area, because the area is growing.”

Expanding the Chaos Footprint

Chaos Tattoo will host a one-year anniversary open house on Saturday, May 16, marking one year since Gatcha took over and rebranded the tattoo studio next to her piercing business.

Gatcha said she purchased the neighboring shop after its previous owner relocated out of state. Rather than continuing to operate it as an appointment-only space, she saw an opportunity to create something more community-oriented.

“We’ve been trying to open the doors more,” Gatcha said. “Just trying to welcome in the local community more, get more visibility for the artists who are all local people.”

The artists currently working out of Chaos Tattoo — Bill McKay, Brianna Youngblood, and Bella Holeva — all hail from the Pottstown area, while Evan Woodacre, who will join the shop full-time in June, is from Kimberton.

Gatcha said the anniversary event itself was intentionally designed to highlight local musicians, artists, food vendors, and creators.

The celebration will include:

  • Flash tattoos from noon to 7 p.m.
  • Walk-in piercings until 6:30 p.m.
  • Live music from local musician Cory Hoover from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Catered barbecue from Uncle B’s Bar B Q during the same timeframe

Neighboring bakery Baked By Jul will also create special Chaos-themed cookies for attendees.

Rather than centering all activities in one storefront, Gatcha said each space will serve a different purpose during the event. Walk-in piercings will be handled at Chaos Piercing, while tattooing and live music will take place inside Chaos Tattoo. Food and artist vendors will be set up inside Chaos Studio.

Providing a More Comfortable Experience

Gatcha, who studied business, has been piercing professionally for nearly 20 years. She is a member of the Association of Professional Piercers and earned a degree as an applied jewelry professional from the Gemological Institute of America.

In addition to her certifications and experience, her professionalism has earned her a reputation as a trusted option for families, resulting in frequent referrals from local children’s hospitals.

To that end, Gatcha said maintaining separate spaces for tattoos and piercings has been an important part of the identities of the businesses, particularly because more than half of Chaos Piercing’s clientele includes families and children receiving first-time ear piercings.

She noted that tattoo shops can sometimes feel noisy and chaotic for children, while adults getting tattooed may not necessarily want kids nearby.

“Having the separate spaces is a little bit more comfortable for everybody,” Gatcha said.

Setting the Bar, Creating Opportunity

Part of the reason Gatcha purchased the tattoo business was to help ensure consistency and high standards across the board.

“I see a lot of great work locally. I also see a lot of not great work locally,” she said. “I wanted to make sure that we were adhering to a standard where people could come in, get what they want, and know that it was done well.”

The newest addition to the Chaos footprint, Chaos Studio, grew out of a desire to create affordable, flexible workspace for entrepreneurs and creatives who may not be ready to commit to a traditional lease.

The space includes a rentable classroom and conference room, photography studio, private office areas, and smaller meeting spaces for coaching, therapy, and one-on-one sessions. Gatcha said the goal is to lower the barrier to entry for people trying to launch or grow a business.

“The idea is to give everybody a start,” she said.
